How to edit your music video

To make a music video it is beneficial to know how to edit a music video, so that we are qualified and equipped for making our music video the best to our ability. Therefore we had a lesson on how to edit a music video. There are five main steps that you can take when editing which are Take footage and synch up Performance cut ,Narrative cut, and Colour grading. when editing we shall be using the software called (adobe premiere pro). on the software you have 4 main screens. on the bottom left you have bins & (rushes) screen which provides all the raw material from the camera work from the shoot day. Another one which is the timeline were you drag and place your footage on there while you edit on the footage. One the top left you have a preview screen to show you everything on that timeline. And top right you have the video screen.
There are two ways to audio picture sync and audio sync when using (Adobe premiere pro). you firstly take a footage and sync it up with the song. to break it down , if you are picture syncing first you chose number (for example 51.10 ) on a extract of footage, press 'i' for in then find the same number on the timeline and drag the video (and this is only visual , not audio) and sync up the footage in time, accordingly. However If the picture syncing fails to work because you cannot see the playback screen on the footage ,then use the (audio syncing) . To help find a specific footage through aural sound , there is a The long beep at the start , this is to get everyone prepared to "stand by" before the camera starts rolling. Then there are two different drum effect before the song. Find a drum effect sound on footage, then find same sound on timeline and check. Once you have done this use same procedure as picture syncing (press 'i' for in and then sync together. It is important that the footages are completely synced unwise it can look poorly made. afterwards make sure to sync up all the performance shots on top of each other and rename each shot of what they are on the timeline. To do this you (right click on cut 1 - duplicate). it is important to name each footage a name that you remember or that specific shot and in the name include the angle maybe of the camera for example ("wide shot of band playing") this will keep all the footages organised and easy to navigate.another tip we leant is that you press "plus" to zoom in. Always as well make a duplicate of the timeline ( right click duplicate ) and name it performance cut , then right click on we're the rushes are , do loads of duplicates. if your wanting to cut press "C" for cut.
There are also 4 important rules which are key for making a music video. Firstly you have to listen to the music and illustrate what the song is doing. this is highly important because when it comes to editing you need to reflect clearly what the correlation is between the chosen footage of the song and the music that compliments it to create fluidity. Secondly the first time the singing starts you have to show the lead singer to show that he is the artist/singer of this music video and it also links to (Dyers star theory) of having the the focus on the lead singer to show his importance really clearly to the consumers. Thirdly group your shots together , this is to keep all your different angles of shots organised into one category for example all the wide shots of the band and models will be grouped under wide shot to keep it all in order for when you want to find a specific shot when editing. Lastly you have to cut to movement , or also known as graphic movement edit so you there fore make a graphic match for example you cut from a hand movement to another however still portraying that its her/his hand but in a different stance.

Another tip is to use a drawing or a plan beforehand and make sure to stick to it!,this is important , especially when working with a group when each group member has a go at editing you make sure to do the next job of editing not re-doing someones else's and making it up as you go along because then the group could get confused with what has been editing and in which element of the plan. Also make sure to do 10 seconds each time you edit of amazing edited footage to your ability. this is so that you can concentrate on one element/shot at a time so its not as intimidating. also when you only do 10seconds of the best ever cut you have done then you can next time do another 10 then another then you eventually have at the end a whole music video that is done to the best standard. It is not always good to do a rough cut because in the end you only end up changing little things from the rough cut and it can take more time because then you will have to do a "actual cut" and there wont be much of a difference. doing a rough cut can be time consuming and waste of time. Do the lighting effects or CGI afterwards after the whole footage is cut and edited. Lastly don't show your actors or friends your editing process or pieces that are already edited (except your group members of course) because they may want to change the editing plan or start controlling your video especially if they are an actor in the video , they can always watch it when its on youtube and the final cut is finished!
