Track - “Waiting” by Vök

One female singer and some dancers.  Her image is portrayed as an indie singer in an urban context.  Plain and simple and not flashy.  The artist is similar to Disclosure because they are both categorised under the Indie/ alternative youth sub genre.  They are both a mixture of genres as they offer both pop and electro-beat in their music.

Concept

The concept is about waiting to achieve life’s goals, the journey and the struggles people have in life.  It also tackles our tendency to “wait” for life’s fortunes to happen rather than proactively making them happen, or our “wait” to be happy rather than enjoying the happiness that each day brings.  

Setting/Staging

The singer is featured in a lift and we see her journey to get to the top.  A tall long circular white tube that moves slowly upwards.  The artist is in turmoil as she physically struggles to break free from the lift’s confines which also represents the turmoil in her mind. there are dancers dancing in a hop hop style to represent the place the lift is taking her, the camera will cut between her in the life and the happy free spirited them to show the audience the place she is trying to reach while she is in the lift. And were she wants to be , the dancers will be in a plain dimmed studio with glowing different coloured fluorescent lights to represent the party happy free spirited theme. When she arrives at the top of the lift and breaks free from the lift, she is at peace with herself and we see her join the crowd of people and see her break into freedom.  At this point scene opens into a scene of happy people who are parting and living their life.

Performance elements 

While we have shot of the artist inside the studio built lift, there are dancer that are dancing in a hip hop style throughout the video, and they are dancing at a place were she is trying to get to ‘the happy place’ were people are civil and uplifting, this is to replicate the place she wants to be. So while adding short scenes of the dancers dancing and an audience clapping them on we force at the beginning of the video were the lift is taking her mentally and physically. There will also be a scene of her walking on the streets almost lost because she hasn't found herself and the crowd of people she wants to be with. She will then walk into a building then in the lift to show the audience were she is wanting to go.

Costume

She is dressed in white/ earthy colours to maintain the simplicity of the video and to emphasis the blandness of life (if we let it be so).  The dancers dressed in bright colourful clothing in a broad mix of styles  (indie/urban/ethnic to represent choice, fulfilment and satisfaction and o capture the genre of the music.

Narrative

The narrative tells the story of the artist waiting for happiness to arrive in her life. I am using an elevator to represent the tumultuous  waiting process. And we see scenes of dancers dancing in a hip hop style with a surrounding clapping audience to foreshadow the place she wants to go too.It takes us through her inner struggle to achieve her goals and her actual achievement of her goals as she arrives at the top of the lift and breaks free by the end of the song.  We see  what she is looking for in life - the place and spirit - through the dancers, 

Style and visual strands

Simple, clean style.  Visually I will create a sense of confinement - like a solitary confinement in a prison or a mental institution - through the small, cramped dimensions of the elevator and the camera angles .There will be close ups of her face to highlight the anguish and high angles looking down at her from the top of the lift to reinforce her “powerlessness”.  This visual will be juxtaposed to to the colourful place in which she wants to reach. 

Video

The video fits in with the track both in terms of the lyrics and music. The video will feature a female singer in a small, confined lift which is moving slowly upwards. In the lyrics she repeats the word “waiting”  which I have interpreted as  waiting for happiness. we see scenes of the place she wants to get to which is a place of people dancing in a hip hop style to convey to the audience her ideal place for her. the video will cut between her in the lift  and the dancers and her walking on the streets lost because she is discovering what she is looking for in life.  The waiting is shown through the wait to get to the top of the lift and the slow movement of the lift upwards. The video shows her reaching the top of the lift at which point the lift door opens.  This is a metaphor for her reaching her goals and achieving happiness. As the lift doors open open we see a sea of dancers.  This  represents the freedom and happiness she finally reaches.

Star Image

The video enhances the star image of the artist through the style of the video.  For example the artist is very indie and wants her audience to appreciate her for her music. She does not want to be marketed based on her beauty or sex appeal.  Therefore the artist will be wearing everyday clothes rather than overly sexy clothing.  The video will help highlight her lyrics about the difficulties of life and will showcase her artistry.
