Write up of lip sync exercise
Afraid i was Ill for when the class did this exercise However instead i interviewed one of my class mates (Oriana) and she spoke through the exercise as to , what they did in the studio , what they learnt , what steps did they do to cut the video ,what did they learn about editing music video, had they made any mistakes on the day, how could they shoot or cut more effectively , how has this helped them progress . Here i have done a write up of my interview with( Oriana)
They filmed on three different sets , they had one that had the dolly on it and it did the tracking shots, so there was a track on the floor and there was a rig on the floor and someone would look through it. and there were some big white panels which had the neon lights. So they would do tracking shots, from were the performer would walk in. Or some of the time they did had a few people and then they panned through/ tracked past their faces and they would focus on little things such as their hands. And then when it came to the rolls they had always had a director , performers who would always tell them what to do ans what they wanted from each shot- the camera man would then do that , and the performer would do as their asked.
Then there were a floor manager who would basically they would go around every group and make sure everyone was ready to do another take. And they would have clear communication such as "stand by " , "roll cameras" "camera rolling" . The floor manager would be in charge of that with every group. Its one person who has authority over the entire room. In that respect as to when you are filming and when you are not . And a play back which is quiet important - they would hold an ipad which had a program on it , which consists of having a timer which starts on 15 seconds. Everyone would have to focus their camera onto the playback they would play it , and the numbers would start clicking and then the numbers would turn back and you would have to refocus very quickly. Its very important because when it come to syncing the footage with the song you can look through the numbers on the ipad and you can find it so you find the identical lyric that corresponds with the lip syncing. You find the numbers in the song then you find the numbers in the footage and thats a way of having that correlation between the two. through editing they would sync up loads of shots first and then they would start cutting them down but they would not get rid of anything from the timeline they would keep everything their so that its all synced up and so it makes it easier for editing. When you are about to roll you hear one bass sound and a snare and you have to listen to because you are trying to sync up the lyrics with the footage you are about to make.so if you don't have a visual que they will use the bass and the snare instead so the performer can hear she/he que to start performing. As sets there was the green screen were the camera was in front of it. and the sofa , were they would sit down and lip sync to the music. They felt quiet limited with that set because they could not really perform or dance along to the song. However the next se they had the apartment setting were it was shown as blue walls and a photo of the beetles on the wall and the camera was at eye-line level and it was not as exciting as the tracking set but in that respect a lot of people were finding a lot of ways to be creative with that set so the music video would not look/feel boring.
they learnt how to use the dolly and the significance with the playback and how to sync up your footage with the music. and the aural que of when to start and the simple communication that happens when about to roll. steps that they did to complete the editing - they synced up all the shots and labelled each shot. For example they would say on the label "sofa , green screen, canvas, track for vogue" you name them static words so that you individually know which shot that is. then you choose which section they look best in. you don't want to be always cutting on the beat because then the editing does not look continuous and it as if its "something new something always new". so shot duration is quiet interesting to look at when it comes to editing. mistakes that were made on the day is that one of the teachers always make us do a wide shot mid shot because the actors/ performers were getting carried away with ideas of how to do a shot when they actually needed to do the basic shots first rather than going over the top with fancy shots when its their first time. when realistically when having many different shots for each bet every second may not look as nice as having it simple and clean and continuous than fast pace and disjointed between each shot.
