post production (editing)
Post production
Film editing is a part of creative post production
process of film making. We have used editing to make our thriller come together.
The key decisions that I made in the editing process was to not start the
editing from the beginning to the end (as the film would) it was to start the
editing instead at points and sections of the thriller then gather the edited
footage together and join them together from start to end. Through this
technique Andrew and Daisy were given a section to edit and me and Chris were
given a section then we would gather our different footage together into one
whole one. There were expectations set up before we started editing which were that
we were told to save each time were we’re editing so that we would not lose our
footage. We were also taught the terminologies to help understand how to edit.
Our intended outcome of this process is to have an opening scene of a thriller
but to also show the process and stages we did through editing on our blog so
we can convey our experience. To make our thriller we have been using a wide
range of different technologies for example, audio net, premiere pro, soundcloud,
Spotify , tools, and font/titling software’s.
We looked at our rushes and reviewed and selected
shots to help us know if what we had was what we were looking for. The timeline
on the editing software was there to help us assemble our footage. It is important
to name clips so you have a file of the different angles that are in the shots,
so when we want a hand held footage it is easy to find. The framing of the shot
is important because if we have a shot from a distance then one close up and it’s
the same scene we may not be able to use both since it has to be continuous.
Some of our shots were cropped because at some point in the footage. You can
either see the camera stand or behind the scenes person in the shot by accident
, so we would cut them out. Digital tools such as blade and razor allows us to
cut half the clips i.e half the footage. Playback and review helps us to know
what angle and technique we want to use
on a certain scene for example we used hand held a lot because we loves the
effect it had on the footage and it also replicated a shaky composition. Once we
have tidied the shot and its composition we decided to do it randomly so to
edit the shot and then plot it onto the timeline then later we will decide the
order of the shots.
The decisions made in relation to the sequence of
order of the shots was that we are putting it together using the story board
then we will decide what works. We used the timeline to plot our footage on it
to see what works and what doesn’t. This provided continuity because we did it
randomly and do lots of footage's and at the end we put them together. On the
timeline we used two layers of videos and two layers of sound occasionally we
would uses one layer of sound and one layer of video. We haven’t added titles
yet but we will add a title at the beginning to show the title of the movie. We
have researched names for the name of our thriller but we haven’t finalized it yet.
For sound we are using found sound and CGI for the gun shots also as a backing
track we plan on adding hearts beats and breathing as an sound effect. This was
non diagetic. The sound of heart beats and breathing we are getting from the
internet however we intend on buying the sound from a site called audio.net.
To make the sequence continuous we would make sure
every shot that links to the next sequence has a flowing linking pattern. In
our thriller we are not using any contrapuntal sound but we may use sound bridges.
We have used shot reverse shot to show who is the bad guy and who is the good
guy. We use diagetic and non diagetic to make sure there are no continuity
errors for example in the first few seconds in out opening scene this is shown.
We added transitions through adding clips of one of the players shouting and
then overlapped that sound with another shot sequence. We will be using CGI for
the bullet sound, and for the splattering of blood when the characters get shot, and also muzzle flashes to convey that it is hand held and also to create a edgy image when the characters get shot . The pacing of the editing is quiet quick at points and the length of each shot is short to replicate
that rocky mood and to show the physicality of the thriller being partly action
. this effect connotes the genre which Is thriller through creating suspense
through pauses which is a quality a thriller beholds. We used premier pro as a
digital technology. Premiere pro is the software we used to edit, they helped
create our thriller opening scene by planting footage into the timeline and
making a sequence.
