Evaluation task 2 media

Latency conveys two social groups. I will be depicting regional identity as our primary social group which explores protagonists and antagonists between England and Russia. Secondly I will be looking at Gender as our secondary social group which is exhibiting the lack of women characterizing just in men.

Firstly the editing methods used in Latency lead to an antagonist opinion of Russia. This is shown at the beginning of the opening through shot revers shot used in the first minute of latency. Which shows that the protagonists  (English) are fighting a foreign team. The shot revere shot is also there to show interactions between both teams to show the communication. However here it is showing the contrast between good and evil. There is also use of shot duration on the  English which allows the viewer to see the war from there perspective making them the good team. It also adds value to the English team making them more important that Russia, which makes the English the focal point. Another Editing technique used is  speed modification on the Russians running away from the bomb which could show how the English are more skillful and have won. Continuity was purposefully made to not flow to substitute for the edgy and rocky effect we wanted to give off and it was mainly focused on the Russians because it doesn’t show Myles coming back to life after he died but it the character on the opposing team David coming back to life which shows the focal point is on the English.

The camera used in latency is hand held which crated a fast moving panic to the thriller. However when the camera is on on the Russians the camera is still and calm which lowers the surprise and suspense on the Russians making the English more frustrated and panicky. On the English the camera tends to use heavily many close ups or mid- shots mainly at a low angle to perceive the English as more powerful and important in the story-line. The camera follows English  which creates the impression the audience should be on the side.the Camera angles were used to make the Russians look more intimidating and threatening onto the other team. For example, a low angle was used on the Russian sniper who shoots David. The low angle creates a powerful and superior look but also conveys a image of the game not being fair since he is hidden and is not fighting in the same way as the other characters

Mise –en- scene in latency helps to combat the impression that the Russian are inferior to the English charters. For example the Russians clothing are not consistent with what the English are wearing because one of them are wearing an out of place hat  and another is wearing a hoodie which could suggest for the story line that they aren’t as prepared or organized. For the set there is little smoke when the Russians are in the shot but then this is contrasting because the English are almost consumed by it.  Also the English seem to be more supportive of each and stick together in character positioning rather than the Russians are all dispersed and separated . throughout the opening the Russians contain a poker face and remain serious there than the English tend to show more emotional facial expressions.

And lastly in sound you hear more English gun shots and they seem to be louder and more powerful.
The sound effects are non-dietetic.. there are multiple gunshot noises coming from the Russians which could suggest that the Russians are intimidating and have more ammunition. There is dietetic English dialogue which shows how the English communicate more. The Russians speak their language but on say a few words briefly when they are exiting the bus. When the  English men are running you can hear the sound very vibrantly which embody the feeling them being close to the audience.

In our thriller as a group we agreed that our secondary social group is gender. Our thriller is adhering towards a masculine men stereotype, and is targeted towards young men of 18-20 . All characters in the entire sequence are male dominated. This is adhering towards the stereotype that only men can be involved in war. For example, when Callum starts dying, David becomes incredibly emotional. This subverts the stereotype that men are ‘tough,’ or aren’t capable of feeling that level of emotion or being able to show it.The female gender is deliberately not shown in this piece, as it adheres to both stereotypes that women aren’t in the army, and should instead be at home. Overall, ‘Latency,’ negatively represents both Russians and females.
