Latency

Latency is new phenomenon of a thriller. In this article I will be describing why this opening scene has been such an attraction to all views.

By watching Latency the target audience will find the opening extremely pleasurable. Firstly because it has connotations from action figures and it involves action and violence. In the thriller there are guns, explosions ,camouflage costumes , VR headsets which reveal the ugly truth of the story of the end – suggesting it was just a game. It follows the typical action film conventions. Action movie fans will enjoy the features of our opening scene. Follows the video game conventions.

the thriller is a sub-genre. And films such as ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘Gamer’ which was made in 2012 would be heavily influential on the thriller since it follows the same characters of latency. The phenomenon thriller was set in a paintball (deliberately) to combat that it is a game. The audiences respond well to this film  because its represents call of duty ,which is a game , and follows similarities of gaming videos and the location links to were the location of games are. When you watch Latency the final location which is revealed at the end should be recognised by their target audience, as they will intuitively make the association between the computer and virtual reality headset.

The plot is about a gamer who plays games through virtual reality, however little does he know that the games has been hacked so whatever happens in the game happens in real life… which could lead to death. The story line attracts the audience and makes their opening a very popular opening sequence because of the unique story line and the target audience will appreciate action ,thriller and sci-fi combined as a genre. The audience will also convey a similarity with the characters as the target audience act similar to them. Additionally they will also see the divide in good / evil in the thriller which replicates as an attraction as the other team in the story line is ‘foreign’ this will make the thriller more enjoyable as the audience will find more realistic.

The thriller uses many narrative devices such as a ‘plot turn’ which is the reveal of the virtual reality headset and also that the game has lead the character to die in real life. Suspense is created through quick cuts and hand held camera to create an edgy mood.

The social groups that the thriller is aiming for is 18-20 that enjoy gaming and action movies . it appeals to the audience because it satisfies males (mainly) because the opening is very stereotypical masculine and has the appeal of violence and action contributed in the opening but also however satisfies women through the attraction of watching the masculine characters.

In the opening the thriller has decided to not have a soundtrack so the audience can focus more on the ambient diegetic sound which are fore example distant gun shots. We also found the a soundtrack would be distracting and would reduce the level of tension which the thriller provides.

Knowing the directors ,stars, star names and institutional logos the audience will recognize that director of the film produced action packed action thrillers, and so the audience will even more want to watch the film , knowing it should be a good film. They will know it’s a good film through the film style and through amazing editing through technology which used extremely fast pace cuts and there are no transitions , the shots are quick cut the longest is 5 seconds. The film also incorporates mizzle flashes , blood splatters CGI and fake blood , this prepares you for an marvelous opening sequence
